FLAME RETARDANTS

Why Graphite is used for flame retardants

Graphite is a common ingredient in flame-retardant materials due to its ability to resist high temperatures and slow down the spread of fire.

When exposed to heat or flames, graphite expands and forms a protective layer over the material it is applied to. This layer helps to prevent oxygen from reaching the underlying material, which can reduce the intensity and spread of flames.

Additionally, graphite has a high thermal conductivity, which means it can absorb heat and dissipate it quickly, further helping to reduce the temperature of the material and preventing it from igniting. Because of these properties, graphite is often used in flame-retardant coatings, foams, and plastics, as well as in building materials such as insulation and roofing materials.

CARBOFLAMEX

PranaGraf CarboflameX expandable graphite is more high tech and complex than you can imagine. So just what is expandable graphite and how is this material recognised the world over as the most efficient material to suppress fire and save lives?

CarboflameX is a completely natural and exceptionally pure flake graphite which has been subjected to a controlled intercalation process, to produce a finished product that expands up to a thousand times its volume when subject to heat.  This intercalation process inserts a ‘expansion agent’ between the graphite particle structure, that, when subject to fire, expands dramatically to seal and close vulnerable areas of buildings such as doors, ceiling ducts and floors to limit the spread of fire and prevent loss of life.
